FISD Special Olympics swim team wraps up 1st season

The Friendswood ISD Special Olympics swim team recently completed its first season. The team consisted of students ranging in age from 9 to 22.

The team competed in the Area 22 Special Olympics meet held at Sugarland in September, where athletes received a total of 24 gold, 13 silver, three bronze, four unified gold medals and one participation ribbon.

The team also participated in the Special Olympics meet held at the University of Houston on October 1 where athletes received 15 gold, eight silver, eight bronze and four unified gold medals.

The FISD Special Olympics team consisted of Wyatt Baker, Garrett Burtzlaff, Audrey Crues, Anna Griffith, Molly Hart, Lindsey Jensen, Cristopher Martinez, Trent Norman, Daniel Presley, Jake Randal, Ashlee Reuter, Jay Reynolds, Ben Theriault, Danny Vazquez and Harrison Vera.

The Unified swimmers were Kyle Griffith, Troy Griffith and Philip Stevens.

“We'd like to thank all our volunteers that gave up a part of their summer to help make this a wonderful experience for the Special Olympic Swimmers. Without their help, the swimmers would not have competed as well as they did,” said teacher Theresa Byrd.

Volunteers, on a regular basis were Susan Bode, Allie Crump, Cooper Dixon, Mandy Goodwin, Marley Goodwin, Meranda Goodwin, Kyle Griffith, Greg Griffith Sr., Troy Griffith, Haley Hoff, AJ Liufau, Cheryl Michalk, Diana Norman, Lauren Ondreko, Amanda Oswald, Collin Oswald, Ariana Randal, Austin Ratcliff, Brennan Regian, Brooke Regian, Julie Regian, Chase Reuter, Lauren Russell, Hailey Salyer, TJ Scott, Anne Short, Philip Stevens, Tommy Stuart, Melanie Theriault, Kelsey Young and Kenton Young.

Team officials thanked FISD for allowing the use of the natatorium for practices.
