Highlights from food bank's 2011 Harvest Moon Gala
published Dec. 29, 2011
The Galveston County Food Bank hosted its annual Harvest Moon Gala fundraiser Dec. 11 at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa, and Convention Center. The event is the food bank's largest annual fundraiser and supports its effort to provide food to those in need throughout Galveston County.
At the gala, members of the military were recognized for service to the country. Harvest Moon Outstanding Service Awards were given to the following community members:
Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Flores, deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom as the attack asset for the 10th Mountain Division. During his yearlong tour, he was witness to the resurgence of the Taliban and participated in some of the fiercest fighting in the Hindu Kush Mountains, in the hotly contested valley in Afghanistan known as the Korengal Valley.
Capt. A.J. High, a WWII pilot and member of the crew stationed in the Aleutian Islands that was to be the backup for Jimmy Doolittle's Crew.
Army Air Corpsman Bill Buchanan, who earned three sets of wings (navigator, engineer, and radio operator), was to serve as flight engineer on a B-29 designated to drop the third atom bomb had Japan not surrendered on Aug. 14, 1945.
Keeping in tune with the 1940s theme in honor of WWII veterans, performances at the event were provided by the big band Pee Wee Bowmen Band, Fred Astaire Dance Studio and dancers Kim Lampkin and Miles Root.
In a news release, gala chair Becky Trout likened the food bank's work to a soldier's commitment to country. "At the Galveston County Food Bank, our commitment to end hunger locally is a continuous battle to serve the one in five residents of our county facing food insecurity every day," she said.
