Local democratic headquarters to host grand opening
The Bay Area New Democrats will officially open the 2012 campaign headquarters with a grand opening event from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26.
The opening celebration will honor the 92nd anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution Aug. 26, 1920, according to a press release.
The amendment gave women the right to vote after nearly a century of efforts by the women's suffrage movement. The democratic gathering will recognize the anniversary with food and visits from candidates seeking both male and female votes, says the release.
During the election season, the headquarters will be the site for campaign activities, phone banking and sign delivery. It will also be used for voter registration, club meetings, social events and debate-watching parties.
Bay Area New Democrats, formed in 1999, is a progressive Democratic organization serving the Bay Area. Members are involved in education, the environment, the space program, immigrant rights and consumer protection, according to the BAND website.
The headquarters facility is at 17647 El Camino Real, Clear Lake, just north of NASA Road 1, in a strip shopping center that includes Martinez Mexican Bakery and Sunny's Food Store.
